You are the Key to F(X) Leadership

Over the next several weeks, Ty and Eliza met to go over the concepts of the Inspire or Retire Theorem and the information from the first meeting of Know Yourself, Know Your People, and Know Your Organization. They met once a week to discuss the ideas and concepts and to see how Eliza was progressing on the job.

“Eliza, the Inspire or Retire Theorem is a way to visualize what your leadership responsibility is every day. However, the most important part of the theorem is the function of x or F(x).

“Why is the Function of x important? I thought it represented all leaders in the organization. Eliza asked.

“It does but each leader is an individual and each leader is part of the theorem. However, the function of (x) is you. You are the key to the theorem. Said Ty as he pulled out the F(X) Leadership Model book from the bookshelf

“I am the key to the formula?” Eliza asked inquisitively.

“Let me show you what I mean”. Ty said, “Here is the F(x) Leadership Model. It is an extension of the Inspire or Retire Theorem and further explains your leadership role.”

F(X)

“I know it looks confusing but let me explain each part.” Ty said as he put the book in from of Eliza.

“The elements of the symbol is the Greek symbol DELTA which represents change or difference. Change as a leader is a constant. The changes you make daily and throughout your life will make a difference in your leadership and your life.” Ty said as he continued talking about the model.

“Inside the DELTA is Character, Competence, Courage, and Commitment or the C4. It is the most explosive part of the function of (x) because it represents who you are deep down inside, your abilities, your strengths, and your passion. Why is C4 vital to your leadership and to you as a leader? You have control over each of these characteristics in your life. Character, Courage and Commitment all start from inside and your competence is an outward growth of your character, courage, and commitment. These characteristics need to be developed continuously”. Ty said and then paused. “Any questions so far?” Ty asked Eliza

“Nothing yet so far.” Eliza replied. “Please continue.”

“Okay. I said that your C4 requires continuous development so the rest of the model describes how. The first way is Continuous Development or CD. You must continually develop yourself professionally, technically, mentally, spiritually, and physically to stay on the leading edge and to be the example for others to follow. This type of development also helps you build resiliency into your life.” Ty said and then continued.

“The second way is through Continuous Growth or CG. Coupled with your continuous development of your internal and external capabilities and abilities is the continuous growth process. Growth is your self-discipline and self-commitment to apply and incorporate the lessons learned during your development to your character and leadership abilities. Without growth, you will never become the leader you want to be or we need you to be.”  Ty said

“Finally, the last part of the model is CR which stands for Continuously Reinventing Yourself.  As you grow and develop your character, competence, leadership abilities, and your capabilities you will continually reinvent who you are and what you are capable of accomplishing. A good way to remember this as you grow and develop you are expanding your mind and changing your life,” said Ty as he finished describing the model.

“So F(X) leadership Model is a way of thinking about my development as a leader,” Eliza concluded.

“Correct it is a learning leader’s cycle of growth, development, and reinvention and it is a leader’s developmental strategy for becoming a better leader,” Ty said.

“What do I need to do to start using the F(X) Model so I can become a better leader?” asked Eliza

“Hopefully the F(X) model will not only make you a better leader but help to improve other aspects of your life. Ty said and then continued.

Know Yourself, Know your People, Know your Organization

First, know yourself – Learn about your skills and capabilities and take control of your life and leadership. A leader knows and understands their strengths, weaknesses, capabilities, abilities, and their emotions. This is the key to becoming a better leader.

Second, know your people – Leadership requires that you know your people and continue to build the relationship you have with you subordinates or followers.  You need to be a leader that influences and inspire others and helps them grow and develop.  Positive teamwork supports the organization’s goals, objectives, and fosters behavior directed toward the achievement of these ends. Teamwork that supports hard work, loyalty, quality consciousness, or concern for customer satisfaction is examples of positive team norms.

Third, know your organization – As you grow and develop yourself and your people to make your organization better.  A successful leader knows the objectives, goals, priorities, vision, and mission of the organization.  A leader is dedicated to accomplishing the mission and strives towards mission success.

Inspire or Retire!!

Inspire or Retire

Inspirational Leadership + Motivated People = a great team with outstanding accomplishments.

Over the next two weeks, Eliza was in and out of the office for in processing and more organizational training to help her acclimate to the new environment. During those two weeks, she thought about what she learned on her first day and her concept of what a leader is and does began to change.

Also during those two weeks, she kept hearing the phrase “Inspire or Retire” which made her more curious of the true meaning. After her in processing and training was finished, she stopped in to see Ty again.

“That was a long two weeks of training. It was very useful and I feel like I am ready just focus on my work.” Eliza said as she walked into Ty’s office.

“Glad to have you back. Did you learn anything new?” Ty asked.

“I did learn more about the organization than I knew before joining. I now know the mission, vision, priorities, and core values of the organization but feel I could know more. However, the one thing I kept hearing repeatedly was the phrase you used on my first day “Inspire or Retire”. What does that mean?” Eliza asked.

Ty smiled and said, “Inspire or Retire is the motto of the organization and it reminds everyone that you need to be an inspirational leader in the organization every day or retire and let someone else be the leader. It is why the people in the organization enjoy working here. We are accountable to each other.”

How can I find out more about the motto?” Eliza said.

“Let me make a phone call and then we can go learn more about Inspire or Retire” Ty said as he picked up the phone.

Again, they walked through the organization but this time Ty had Eliza point out the important areas and significance of each. He wanted Eliza to turn from just a learner into a teacher. Eventually they arrived at another door close to the last door they visited. However, this time the door was open and there were people already in the office waiting.

“Good Morning, Ty” said Joshua and Karis almost in unison.

Good Morning to the both of you” Ty replied. “I would like for you two to meet Eliza. She is one of my new employees and a new member of our team.”

“Welcome to the team Eliza” Said Joshua as motioned everyone to the table in the room.

“Eliza said that you would like to learn more about the Inspire or Retire motto and what it means?” Karis said as they walked over to the table.

“Then you have come to the right place. Karis and I are the Directors of Strategy and Marketing and understand the Inspire or Retire motto and the Theorem,” Said Joshua.

“Theorem?” said Eliza. I didn’t know there would be math involved?”

“No math is involved in the theorem. It is a mathematical mnemonic and it visually represents the enduring leadership requirement in this organization” Said Karis as she pulled up the briefing.

“Leadership is fundamental to the success of this organization and creating leaders to meet the challenges is the responsibility of the all leaders” chimed in Joshua.

Leaders and leadership are eternally linked to organizational effectiveness and leader development so the Inspire or Retire Theorem was developed as a way to represent your role as a leader, your leadership expectations, the organizational vision, goals, and values, and the impact you can make on your people.” Ty stated

“Alright let’s begin.”Karis said “This what the formula looks like. Would you like to venture a guess what it means?”

        IOR3

“It looks confusing.” Eliza said as she concentrated on the theorem.

“That is the usual response from most new employees. However, let us break it down in to the small parts and examine the theorem. If you look at the theorem, the limits of this formula range from every junior employee to the most senior management position.” Karis said as the symbol came up on the screen.

Picture2

“What this means is that leadership is everyone’s business. Every employee, from the most junior, such as you Eliza, to the CEO of the organization is a leader and responsible for leading.” Ty said as he helped her to understand the concept.

“It further states that the overall function or the F(X) of every leader is to lead People (P) and execute the Mission (M). Since people are not things we lead them not manage them”. Joshua said as he continued explaining the theorem.

Picture3

“Another way to think of it is people first mission always,” said Karis. “A leader is responsible for both”

“Here is why this organization keeps the talent needed for the future, said Joshua. “The bottom part of the equation is the fusion of your personal core values (CV) and the organizations core values (OV). This is a key and foundational organizational principle. It is the fusion or synchronization of the combined values, beliefs, and tenets of you and the organization. It is a melding of your leadership and the leadership expectations of the organization.”

Picture4

“This is why I joined the organization this organization. My values and the organizational values were very close to the same.” Eliza said.

“That is why people continue to work here and why we have the business reputation we have is because our people agree with our core values.” Karis replied.

“This next part is a bit complicated but it is really easy to understand,” said Ty.

“Right once you understand what each symbol means it is easy to understand,” Joshua as he continued to further explain the symbols.

Picture5

“As a leader of people and in your organization, it is your responsibility to lead by example RE(LxE) and set the standard for your people. Using a 360-degree leadership approach (L (360o)) you can maximize your leadership potential by realizing that you can lead anywhere, anytime, and any place in an organization and in your life. To help build the organization leadership bench in our organization and to help maximize the potential of our people we use the John Maxwell concept of developing people as leaders (DL (10X)) to increase the organizational leadership capacity by 10-fold. Finally as a leader, you need to build resiliency in your life and those that you lead so they are well balanced and able to perform at their maximum potential. Resiliency (Technically, Mentally, Physically, Spiritually)

“I know that this may seem overwhelming at first but Ty will continue to mentor you over the next few weeks to ensure you understand the theorem completely,” Karis said as she changed the slide to the next part of the theorem.

“After compiling the inner equation you a need to have a holistic understanding of the Organization’s (OR) Mission (M) x Vision (V)  x Strategic Plan (SP)  x Priorities (P) in order to develop and build leaders (BL) with Character, Competence, Courage, Commitment, and Innovation(C4I)  to continue the growth and development of leaders for the organization.

Picture6

“The Inspire or Retire Theorem is a way for you as a leader  to examine your leadership every day to see if you are inspiring your people to greater heights of performance and success as emerging and enduring leaders” Ty added.

“When you hear us say Inspire or Retire to one another it is a constant reminder of our commitment to ourselves, our employees, and the organization,” Joshua said as he shut off the computer

“The most significant contribution you can make as leader is to leave a legacy of inspired leaders behind in your wake. As a leader you need to leverage your skills, talents, and experiences to transform your people into future leaders!” Karis said, “It was good to meet you Eliza and welcome to the team.”

“Inspire or Retire Ty.” Joshua, Karis, and Eliza emphatically said

“Inspire or Retire!” Ty replied

Leader application

After reading this chapter can you answer the following questions? Do you know the organizations’ vision, mission, core values, and strategy, and can tell other people about them? Do you share a sense of energy and excitement about being a part of the organization? Is there a shared sense that everyone has a role in the direction of the organization’s mission? Are you inspiring them to greatness and greater accomplishments? Are you leading by example and through words of encouragement?

Leadership Thought Question

Who inspires you as a leader?

F(X) Leadership Insight

The Motto “Inspire or Retire” is a reminder to always inspire yourself and your people. As a leader,
if you can no longer inspire your people it is time to step aside and let someone else take the lead. As a leader, you can choose to fan the flames with inspiration or you can extinguish the flames of your people. By being inspiring you can create a team of motivated people and lead your team to succeed.

F(X) Philosophy

In the F(X) process, the successful leader is defined as one who leads oneself first before seeking to lead others. F(X) Leadership is both a philosophy about personal development and leadership development. It is a set of realistic concepts that people can apply to developing and growing themselves first, then their people and organization.

The F(X) Leadership approach focuses on the leader, the follower, and the organization. The personal power of the leader increases the strength of the team and the strength of the organization when the power of F(X) Leadership is unleashed.

F(X) Leadership comes from within the leader and is fueled by the passion and desire to change, to improve, and to inspire. The leader’s job is not finished until he or she creates followers who are prepared to lead in an organization.

The F(X) process has the capacity to create followers who are leaders in life and in an organization. An F(X) leader is one who transforms their followers into transformational and inspirational leaders in their own right. First, you need the right mindset and a “must change” attitude in order to shape and mold your talent. You have to want to change and reinvent yourself.

Second, you need to adopt a disciplined approach and a strategy to achieve the desired outcome. You need to make your leadership development a deliberate and methodical process that moves you from the “as is” state to the “to be” state. Finally, you need to assess your progression to gauge where you are in your development.

The Three Stages of a Leader

A leader grows in the same method a tree grows. A tree grows in three ways throughout its life.

The Emerging Leader

The trees roots which tunnel into the ground and establish a solid foundation for the tree. The roots of your leadership form the firm foundation for you to build upon. This is your character, competence, courage and commitment or you C4 of your leadership. This stage of leadership is what I call the emerging leader. The seed of leadership begins to grow and the foundation of their leadership begins to take root in their lives. Emerging leaders need time to build their personal, professional and leadership core competencies to establish rings of growth and development. They seek out opportunities for experience in order to harden their core skills.

The Enduring Leader

The tree shoot tip, which grows upward to increase the height of the tree. The shoot tip represents your upward growth and development to achieve greater things in your life and your leadership. It is you always reaching for the stars. An enduring leader continues to build a solid foundation in their personal, professional and leadership core competence to ensure they are well rooted in their skills. They have experienced success and failures as a leader and have learned valuable lessons that they can use as a leader. An enduring leader continues to seek out opportunities for growth and development and opportunities to use their skills to sharpen their capability.

The Experienced Leader

The tree diameter supports the upward growth of the tree and to expand the boundary of the trees territory. The tree diameter represents your ability to get out of your comfort zone and grow, develop, and reinvent yourself to expand leadership roles and responsibility. The growth rings of leadership start to grow and expand the boundary of the leader. The signs of growth and develop are present and the maturity of the leader is evident. The experienced leader’s years of growth, development, experience and life lessons have produced a harden core of personal, professional and leadership skills and critical thinking. The experienced leader now is a developer of other leaders and takes the time to invest their talents and skills into emerging and enduring leaders.

Be a leader of hope and encouragement

I believe we are hard-wired to connect and serve with one another. If we were not hard-wired to connect then social media would not have lasted as long as it has. We need to communicate and connect with one another. Serving one another is an outcropping of our leadership and how we develop others.

Your people want to become the very best they can be and through your leadership they will. Provide encouragement as they grow and develop, it will lift them up and provide the confidence to continue. Bestow grace when they make mistakes. It is very easy to yell and get angry over mistakes, but by doing so you miss an opportunity to continue to develop the person. Show them the error of their ways but reinforce the correct way to do the task or job.

Three Core Competencies

There are three competency areas that I develop and grow on a continuous basis. These three areas of growth and develop are a whole person concept. As you grow and develop these areas, you stay balanced and quickly recognize that all three areas define who you are. No one area defines you. You are the sum of all three parts.

 Personal

Personal Competency is the C4 of your life. This area has been developing since you were born but never stops growing and developing. This competency is the most important to develop and grow because it is the foundation of your professional and leadership competence areas.

Professional

Professional Competency is your career or professional pursuit. It does not define you as a person but it is the area of your learned expertise. It is a vital part of you as it helps you meet areas in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Model.

Leadership

Leadership Competency is your leadership ability and capability. This competency is both your self-leadership and your team and organizational leadership. You must continue to develop this area of expertise as you grow your professional expertise.

Forget the Past and move toward the Future

Learn from your past mistakes and your past successes, but don’t try to relive them. Progress is about moving forward in your life, career and leadership. Holding on to the past will hold you back from future achievements. By forgetting what is behind you and driving toward the future you will continue to grow, develop and reinvent yourself.
